Volunteer Opportunities
Community fundraising and events
Host an event at your child's school, your church, dance studio or sports club. Examples include pancake breakfasts, spaghetti dinners, bake sales, a car wash or lemonade stands.
Larger scale events might include a benefit concert, golf tournament, baseball tournament, 5K Walk/Run
Support Network
Connect with adults, parents and caregivers or teenagers about your experiences with Hemispherectomy surgery. Lend a compassionate ear to someone in your area who is looking for information and who wishes to discuss their concerns on a more personal level.
Raise Awareness
Educate your community about hemispherectomy surgery and The Hemi Foundation. Distribute our publications to targeted medical communities, advocate for research funding from elected officials and reach out to local media to increase the visibility
Local family gatherings
Family gatherings are informal get-togethers where families, relatives, close friends of hemi patients meet and exchange friendship and experiences. In some cases it is the first time a child has met another child who has had a hemispherectomy. Or the first time a family coping with the after affects has been able to sit down with another family and not have to explain their child’s condition.
Family gatherings are initiated by members who fix a date, find a place, and make arrangements for refreshments. There is no formal program presented but the Hemi Foundation provides educational materials to distribute and issues the invitations to families in the area.
National Conference Volunteer
Every four years the Hemi Foundation will hold it's international conference in Los Angeles. 2011 will be the first ever Hemi Foundation Conference in California and it will be a learning experience for us all. The success on the conference will depend greatly on the participation of volunteers, especially those who live in the LA area. Various positions are available. See the following listings for more details.
Children's Camp/Teen Programs
We need leadership for a group of 6-17 year olds or childcare resources for five year olds and younger. Provide activities for the young children and organiize talent shows. Assemble a teen panel to discuss how surgery has affected them.
Clinic Appointments
Help things run smoothly by greeting and escorting patients to their private consultation, keep appointments running on time.
Welcome Bags
Prior to conference, volunteers collect items representing highlights of the host city for the welcome bag given to each registrant. Discount coupons, premiums, snacks, etc. should fill not only the bag, but the hearts of our attendees. Welcome bags and notebooks are collected by volunteers just prior to the event.
On-site Help
You can help set up or break down the registration and resource area. Or help staff the registration desk. Be a workshop recorder or monitor.
*Before planning any fundraiser or event in your area, be sure to contact your regional representative. We can help you with ideas, provide suggestions
and put you in touch with others who have organized similar events.
